J.O.H. for Model Number Whirlpool Refrigerator GX5FHDXVQ07

Damper Control Assembly WPW10196393 / AP6016813 We replaced this according to the video instructions. (Refrigerator was freezing produce in the drawer and everything on the shelves above the drawer.) Thought, according to what we read on here, that this would fix the problem. The thermostat will not go to the normal setting of 4. It stays on 7 and we can't get it to go to a warmer setting after making this repair. Please advise.

Hello J.O.H., This issue can be caused by more than one condition. I would first make sure the unit is set to a cold enough setting to cause airflow at satisfactory durations. If the fresh food compartment temperature is set too warm, since cold air is heavy and will settle to the bottom, this could be causing the drawer to freeze. This would be corrected by setting the fresh food compartment temperature to a COLDER setting. As previously mentioned, this would call for cold more often which, at the same time, stirs up the temperatures inside the unit, keeping the bottom from having cold air settle in it. Other things that could cause issues are also airflow-related. A failing fan motor, separated fan blade, frost buildup in air damper, etc. are several examples of things that can be related to drawers freezing. Good luck with your repair!

Kirk, with the power cord unplugged and the main control W11043763 is accessed, the refrigerator thermistor 12002355 would need to be tested at the connection P5 from the wire at pin 1 to the wire at pin 2. The resistance should measure greater than 10.5KO. If the thermistor checks ok, the main control has failed.

Ed, check the evaporator coils to see if they are frosted up. A defrost problem will cause the refrigerator to get warm due to a lack of air flow and the coils not being able to remove heat. You should be able to put the refrigerator into a defrost cycle and check the defrost heater. If the coils are frosted up, you will need to replace the jazz board, part number WPW10503278

Carol, The "damper control" WPW10196393 Control, is located inside the "pumpkin", on the back wall, ceiling area, inside the refrigerator. " 1. Remove louvered cover off of Damper Control housing by squeezing down on louvers to release from housing. 2 Remove two screws holding housing to rear wall. 3. Remove Damper Control housing. 4. Remove Foam insert by pulling it out. 5. Unplug wire harness from Damper Control. 6. Unclip Damper Control from tabs and remove."

Dean, If you remove the ice bin and the icemaker assembly the damper assembly will be located on the back of the icemaker assembly behind the auger motor.

Hello Ed, If the fans and compressor are running and there is no frost pattern, you will need to look for an oily spot around the Freon lines. This can be anywhere in the sealed system, (inside the evaporator compartment, in the machine compartment behind the unit, etc.). This is a symptom of a Freon loss. When Freon leaks from the sealed system, a bit of the comp[ressor oil will leak out with it so it will make an oily spot. This sort of repair requires a Freon certified technician.

Dan for Model Number MFI2665XEM7

My ice maker stopped working and the fridge compartment temperature is a little warm. 38-45 or so when set on 36F. I have changed out all thermistors and tried control board with no luck. The spec sheet that I do have shows a resistance value of 29,500 ohms at 36 degrees. The replacement thermistors are no where close to that. I think my spec sheet could be incorrect. What should these resistance values be? Maybe there is an updated spec sheet for this fridge. Also at what temperature should my ice maker start making Ice? I thought it wasn't because it was too warm, but it is pretty steady at 10 degrees within the ice box. Thanks for your Help!

Dan, The thermistor resistance reading is correct at 36 degrees it should be 29.5K ohms and at 0 degrees it should be 86.3K ohms. You will want to make sure that at room temperature the resistance is 10K ohms. If the resistance is off then you received a faulty thermsitor. The icemaker would typically cycle between 0 and 5 degrees and would possibly cycle at 10 but would take longer to do so.
