The Deflector is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool dishwashers. Located in the lower corners of the tub, this component works to prevent leaks by keeping water from entering the cracks along the tub edges.

Causes of a bad corner deflector can include cracks, chips, or breaks from repeated impact or stress over time. Mineral buildup can also cause deflectors to warp or become misshapen, reducing their effectiveness.

Symptoms of a bad corner deflector include:

  • Water leaks or moisture inside the cabinet below the dishwasher
  • Puddles or drips near tub corners after cycles
  • Mineral residue or pooling in lower tub corners

Replacing the corner deflector with a new OEM part restores a tight seal to prevent water from entering cracks and causing leaks or damaged components inside the cabinet.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Deflector (Part Number: OEM18038649)

John, First check to make sure there's no articles(plastic lid, saucer, etc on the left side of the tub, between the lower rack and the wall. You will need to remove the dishwasher from the cabinet opening, and slide it out enough to access the left side of the tub assembly(you'll need to turn off the power, water supply, and disconnect the drain hose). Then check the fill hose(between the fill valve and the tub water injector) make sure it's not cracked, has a hole, loose etc. Then check the injector assembly for any cracks and clean out any sediment or debris inside the assembly as best possible, be careful, the water injector/inlet is part of the tub, if you break or damage it, you'll need a new dishwasher.

Jerry, You will want to check down inside the pump to make sure that there is nothing inside that could be causing clogging in which it would not allow proper spraying of the spray arms.

Patrick, You will want to check the spray arms to make sure that they are not cracked or clogged. A cracked or clogged spray arm could cause the unit to have a ripple effect that causes water to splash out from the unit.

Rick, There should be a tank deflector on either side of the tub and would cause leaking if there is one missing. There does not appear to be a gasket at the bottom of the door. Also check your spray arms to make sure that they are not clogged or cracked.

Hello Bill, If there is wear on the deflector then it is bad. You may also want to check spray arms to make sure that they are not clogged or broken and causing rippling effect.

Hello Veronica. Yes if the tank deflectors are bad they can cause the dishwasher to leak. Another thing can cause a leak is a bad tub gasket, or a faulty spray arm. Hope this helps.
