Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Drive Motor (Part Number: OEM9282744)

1 Answer

Ed, there should have been a blue wire that ran from the terminal block to the overload of the motor. In regards to the loud noise, this can be caused by the placement of the motor and mounting brackets being slightly off, creating a vibration. The motor would need to be double-checked to ensure it is sitting securely and that the mounting brackets are as tight as possible. From there, the next step would be to ensure none of the panels are loose when putting the unit back together.

David, it would be recommended that the drive motor 279827 is tested for resistance while the disc behind the terminal block is pulled outwards. From terminal 4 to terminal 5, it should read between 2.4 to 3.6 Ohms of resistance for the run winding. The start winding would measure between 2.4 to 3.8 Ohms when testing from terminal 4 to the copper wire behind terminal 3.

Shell for Model Number 110.87650100

My Kenmore Gas Dryer 110.87650100 switch 337351 is bad I understand that part is no longer available. You have to buy a new motor w/switch, however the new switch wiring connections are different than the original. Do you provide instructions on how to modify existing wiring, etc. for new style switch. If you can get a hold of a original switch that would be even better. Thanks I was able to take the old switch apart and found the upper crossbar and adjoining contact plate rivet looking contact area was worn down, which i sanded down and it worked for a while now it's tripping the breaker again. Is there a way to make a new switch bar etc?

Shell, The motor should come with instructions for the the wiring of the new motor.

Jason, This does not sound like it would be an issue with the dryer but would be caused by a weak breaker. You will want to try to replace the breaker first.

Hello Sam, you will need a multimeter to do this testing. Start by checking for the correct incoming voltages at the dryer's terminal block L1-N 120v, L2 to N 120V, L1 to L2 240v. The door switch can be tested for continuity. If all show correct, next you will need to check the motor drive circuit from the timer to the push to start switch/relay to the thermal fuse to the motor, back to timer and then door switch.

Diego, it would be recommended that the back panel of the timer panel is accessed and the dryer placed in a cycle. Once the dryer stops working, the timer would need to be tested for 120VAC at the terminal BU to ground. If there is not 120VAC, the timer WP8299778 contacts have failed. If there is 120VAC, the next step would be to identify if the door is not fully activating the door switch WP3406107 and if the door switch is loose. If the door easily pushes away from the door switch enough when clothes are in, the door could get pushed far enough to just barely disengage the door switch. This could be caused by a pinched strike W11429589 or weakened catch WP3389441. If the door switch is loose, the screws should tighten it to the front panel. The last possibility would be a motor 279827 failure. The motor would need to be inspected to identify if there is a lint build up covering the motor that can cause it to overheat. If there is, it will need to be cleared. If it continues after clearing the lint, the motor would be suspect through the process of elimination.

Hello Paul, yes, on clothes dryers the drive motor's centrifugal switch also has the heat circuit contacts. On gas dryers, it is the neutral circuit to the gas burner, on electric dryers it is the L2 circuit to the heating element. For your model the drive motor is part 279827.

Scott for Model Number LG7801XSN0

I purchased a replacement motor for my dryer when old motor failed (had power, but hummed before shutting off without starting). Part select #PS334304 Manufacture #279827. I installed it as directed. Pushed start button it hummed and then cut off. I took the dryer apart again and checked wiring and found it to be correct. Only problem I could find was the drum appeared to be misaligned and couldn't turn. I realigned it upon reassembly assuring that it would turn manually. At this point assumed that perhaps when the I attempted to start it the drum wouldn't turn and the motor overloaded and cut power. However, upon reassembly the dryer will not start. It appears that no power is getting to the motor, or the motor has failed. Checked the circuit breaker on wall and all is good, reset anyway just in case. Still nothing when I push start button. Any suggestions as to why it would appear to not be getting power after attempting to start the first time?

Scott, it would be recommended that the door switch is inspected to ensure that a wire has not become loose or disconnected. It is also possible that the door switch may have become loosened to where the door does not activate the switch properly. From there, inspecting for a pinched or loose wire connection would be the next step as this would be the next most likely cause based on the information provided.
