Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Thermal Cut-Off Kit (Part Number: OEM9282741)

1 Answer

Fred, you first want to check the exhaust vent and vent hood for clogs and kinks. Then make sure you install both parts of the kit, properly. Check and make sure the wires to the heater element aren't pinched or shorted to chassis ground or the heater element isn't drooping and touching the case of the heater assembly. Check the blower wheel and housing and the lint trap duct to make sure the internal system isn't clogged with lint or debris.

Jeff, You will want to check the venting of the unit to make sure that from the blower wheel to the outside of your home is clear from obstructions which is the most common thing for this issue.

Corey, This issue would be caused by a bad centrifugal switch on the motor in which the motor would need to be replaced.

Renee, You will want to check the thermal fuse on the heater and test the thermostats. To test them you will be looking for continuity. If there is continuity then they are good and if not then replace the part. If they do check ok then There are 2 components other than the thermostats which would cause the heating element not to work. First is the motor and second the timer. The best option is to disconnect the power to the unit and access the heating element. Disconnect one wire that is going to the heating element, preferably the one on the thermostat side. Plug the unit back up and using a multimeter you will want to turn the dryer on and test for 120 vac at the terminal on the heater where the wire was disconnected. What this will do is eliminate the heater element itself and the motor. If there is 120 vac at this point then you know the heater is good and the motor is good because the other 120 vac coming through the thermostats is the timer side of the circuit. If there is not 120 vac at that point then you will want to test the other terminal on the heater and check for 120 vac. If there is not 120 vac then the motor would be bad and if there is 120 vac then the heater would be the issue. If there is 120 vac at each point then the heater is faulty.

Jeff, You will want to check the rollers on the unit to make sure that the rollers are not seizing up. This would be the most likely issue with the motor humming but the unit not turning.

Tom for Model Number medc400vw

Dryer is totally without power when plugged in and turned on. CB is good. There is 240v at input receiptical. thermal fuse is good. Start switch is good. Door interlock is good. Suspect pluggable main power switch on the drive motor, which appears to be buried under the drum. think if cutoff or high limit thermo switch dryer would still run but not hear. 1) do you think it is the drive motor main power switch? 2) If you do, how do I get to it and test it?

1 Answer

Tom, You will want to test to see if there is 120 vac getting to the main control board. Also test the thermal fuse on the blower housing to ensure that it has continuity. If no continuity then the thermal fuse is bad. If the control board has power to it but unit not turning on and the thermal fuse and door switch check ok would be a faulty control.

Jack, With the unit not shutting off, this issue would most likely be caused by a faulty timer which is part number W11126037.
