Hello Larry. The water filter is installed through the kick plate on the bottom of the front of the refrigerator. It is, by the way, easier to get out and back in if the kick plate is removed first. This actually gives you much better access to the filter. Hope this helps!

Al, Most Whirlpool refrigerators with the filter housing and cap in the kickplate, will operate with the filter removed " Using the Dispenser Without the Water Filter You can run the dispenser without a water filter. Your water will not be filtered. 1. Remove the water filter. 2. Slide the cap off the end of the filter and replace the cap in the base grille. IMPORTANT: Do not discard the cap. It is part of your refrigerator. Keep the cap to use with the replacement filter." Other models with the filter located elsewhere may not, and will need a filter "bypass" plug or filter installed, to operate properly. Odors and taste in the water or ice cubes is most often due to chemicals in the water, or lack of,and is a water quality issue. Thanks and Good Luck
