  • Controls the cycling temperature of the heating circuit to prevent underheating or overheating
  • Helps resolve symptoms like no heat, not enough heat, long dry times, or temperature swings
  • A faulty thermostat may cause overheating that can trip the thermal fuse
  • Located on the blower housing on many models
What's included: 1 internal-bias thermostat Install notes:
  • Disconnect power and shut off gas (for gas dryers) before servicing
  • Access the blower housing; note wire positions and transfer one at a time
  • Mount the thermostat flush to the housing for proper sensing
  • After installation, run a test cycle to verify proper heating

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Internal-Bias Thermostat (Dryer) (Part Number: OEM18024822)

1 Answer

Scott, The first thing that you will want to do is to check to make sure that the vent from the blower wheel to the outside of the home is clear. A restricted vent can cause the unit to overheat. If venting checks ok then you would want to replace the cycling thermostat.

Hello GM. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the motor is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Hello Gene. The large terminals should read closed and the small should show resistance. If so, the cycling thermostat WP3387137 is good.

Charlie S for Model Number Maytag Dyer LSE7806ACE

I heard what sounded like a gunshot and smelled some electrical burning smell. The CB tripped on the panel. I opened up the front panel and tripped the CB, I then turned on the dryer again, I saw a spark and the CB tripped when I turned in the dyer again. the spark came from the Cycling Thist p/n L150-15F. I checked it, cleaned it for dust or anything I could see and reinstalled it. I turned it again and this time it Blew apart!. Is it just this part? I checked the thermostats one one the heater and the other on the blower housing and both were closed. Thanks for our help, Charlie

Charlie, It sure sounds like you have a shorted thermostat [AP4037746} it is a more common occurrence thaan it used to be (the bias heater inside the thermostat is the most likely issue). Your hi limit thermostat and thwermal fuse are OK based on your post, so replace the thermostat and you should be fine. Thanks

Hello Pete. That is a good reading on the Thermostat WP3387137. The two large should read closed and the two small should show resistance. Hope this helps.

Brian for Model Number maytag MDE7600AYW

Two days ago the breaker (at my electrical panel)for this dyer tripped. I reset it and the dyer ran for a short while. Now it won't start or do anything. (The light comes on when I open the door but nothing else) I checked the motor and all the thermostats and heat fuses and the start button for continuity they all seem to be ok. I didn't know how to check 1/2 of the T/stat-multi Temp (part number AP4037746)the portion of which I believe has two resistors? The other half seems to be fine. I can't seem to figure out whats wrong or if there are others things I could check. Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian. The first thing is to remove power. Check the terminal block for all connections being proper and tight. You need 240vac between the outer 2 legs and then 120 vac between each leg and the center(neutral) terminal. You are looking for either a direct short or an overheated part. The thermostat will read closed(normal), 0- .9ohms. The inner biased heater resister value will be approx. 2.5k ohms +/-10%. The dryer heater should read 11-18 ohms. The heater can get lazy and flex during heat and short to case tripping the circuit breaker. Are you getting 240 to the heater? The motor needs to be running full speed so the centrifical sw. internally will close to get the other 120vac to the heater. Is the motor overheating and tripping the breaker? Is the vent restricted? Is the circuit loose in the house supply plug? Is the timer shorted ? Let us know what you find on these checks and we will assist further. Thank you

Paula, It's not to difficult. First thing you need to do is turn the power off to the dryer, or unplug the power cord. Open the dryer door, and remove the four(4) screws ( 2 holding the door hinge and 2 holding the panel on the opposite side of the opening). Lift up slightly on the door hinge side to release the hinge and remove and set the door aside. Grasp the "goal posts" approximately 3/4 of the way down the opening and pull out , to disengage the hidden clips. lean the front panel out at the top and lift up, to disengage the retainer clips from the bottom frame. You now have access to the blower assembly(on the left bottom of the base) and you'll find the multi temp thermostat mounted on the housing with two(2) 1/4" hex head screws. Good Luck and Thanks.
