Heater (Element)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: 8201749

This replacement heater restores proper heat output to the feature that uses it, helping your appliance reach and maintain temperature for consistent results. When the original heater fails open or shorts, related cycles may not heat or take much longer.

  • Converts electrical energy into heat within the appliance's heating circuit
  • Maintains target temperature during the selected function
  • Common symptoms: no heat in the related feature, extended preheat/warm-up, uneven results, or heating-circuit error codes
  • Visible signs can include breaks, burn spots, or an open element on continuity testing
What's included: 1 heater Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug before servicing; allow components to cool
  • Note wire positions and fasteners for accurate reassembly; transfer any reusable clips/insulators
  • Handle the element carefully—avoid bending or striking; make clean, tight electrical connections
  • After installation, run a brief test cycle to ensure proper heating

Defrost Heater (Evaporator)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP10428409

This evaporator defrost heater melts frost from the freezer coils during the automatic defrost cycle to keep airflow unobstructed and temperatures stable. Replace it if frost quickly returns after manual defrost or cooling performance declines. What it does:

  • Heats the evaporator at set intervals to clear frost/ice
  • Restores proper airflow to maintain consistent cooling
  • Common signs of failure include heavy frost on the rear freezer panel, weak airflow or warmer fresh food temps, longer run times, or the evaporator fan striking ice
  • An open reading on a continuity test indicates a failed heater
What's included:
  • 1 evaporator defrost heater
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Access the heater behind the freezer's rear panel; it mounts at/under the evaporator
  • Note wire routing and clip locations; transfer any reusable hardware from the original part
  • Avoid bending the element or damaging evaporator fins; fully defrost ice before reassembly

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The freezer section of an amana bci20tw was not getting cold enough and the back panel in the freezer was covered in ice   Jeff H. • Gettysburg , PA • January 27, 2025

After doing some research, I guessed it was either a faulty defrost timer, defrost thermostat, defrost heater, or some combination of those. Using part location diagrams for my Amana BC120TW I started by looking for the evaporator coils since they obviously weren't producing enough cold. Upon removing the evaporator coil cover, I found the evaporator coils frozen into 1 solid block of ice. Using a heat gun, I carefully defrosted the coils so I could access the defrost thermostat and heater... Read more

Defrost Thermostat (Bimetal)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP61002992

This defrost thermostat senses the evaporator coil temperature and controls the defrost heater. Replacing a failed thermostat restores proper defrosting to prevent heavy frost buildup and helps your refrigerator keep consistent, reliable cooling.

  • Monitors evaporator temperature to allow the defrost heater to energize and to terminate the cycle as the coil warms
  • Protects against overheating in the evaporator area during defrost
  • Failure symptoms include frost/ice buildup on the evaporator cover, reduced airflow, fresh food section warming, or the unit not defrosting
  • Typically mounts clipped to the evaporator tubing inside the freezer
What's included: One defrost thermostat Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing and remove the freezer's rear panel to access the evaporator
  • Transfer the clip/bracket if present and mount the new thermostat in the same location, ensuring firm metal-to-metal contact with the evaporator tubing
  • Route wires away from the heater and moving parts; secure connections and reassemble panels before restoring power
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves—sheet-metal edges can be sharp

This part fixes the following symptoms
  • Freezer section too warm
