I replaced the ball and socket connection for the drum. After doing so, I realized that the belt had been stretched and the tension pulley was not putting enough tension on the belt to turn the drum. After ordering a new belt, extra screw that was lost while disassembling the dryer, and some high temperature lubricant for the drum ball and socket the dryer now runs as well as it did when it was new. We pulled the unit out and removed the back covers. Nothing looked burnt out or shorted. Called a friend who repairs / sells appliances for a living in another country he diagnosed it over the phone and of course added the proper: " I can't be sure but this is the most likely remedy".
