Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washer would fill but then would not agitate or spin there was a burning rubber smell   Karen G. • Katonah , NY • November 28, 2014

All's well that ends well, but the getting there was a bit of a pain. The web site suggests 3 possible causes for my problem (incl. the burning smell). I began with the first two since they were inexpensive compared to the motor, which was the third cause (and also the least often cause). There is no way to visibly tell if the motor is bad or not. After replacing the clutch assembly, which did have some plastic pins broken off) and the motor coupling (which actually looked fine, but the... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Violent shaking during spin cycle   David J. • Birmingham , AL • February 06, 2015

I found that the balance ring had popped loose from the top of the inner metal tub and had been scored so that the fluid was leaking out. So, I removed the metal shell of the washer, then the top plastic cover over the outer tub. I pulled out the old part and put on the new one. I had to give it a pretty good push downward to engage the clips and get it fully seated. I ran my hand along the inside of the metal tub to feel that the new balance ring was fully seated. I also used a short level to... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Maytag clothes washer always had a terrible smell   Steve S. • Scott Afb , IL • January 10, 2015

I took the wash basket out of the tub to remove all the sludge and scale that had accumulated over the years. But I did not have a spanner wrench to remove the large nut holding the basket to the center shaft. No problem - I used a hammer and chisel on the ears. But didn't realize it was a LEFT HAND THREAD!! That's when the nut split in two and I had no choice but to purchase another. Long story short, it's back together and the washer doesn't smell anymore. Live and learn... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Washer would only spin.   Byron V. • Bellevue , MI • February 04, 2020

Found the wonderful parts diagrams you most generously share online and a couple of YouTube videos . I determined it should be repairable. In my cast the agitator shaft was frozen (rusted) in place. I was very fortunate to have been able to eventually remove it with the use of a lot of BP penetrating oil and heat. Long and short the replacement parts fit perfectly and the washer is running like new. Special thanks to the online support make my repair possible. Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Rusted motor shield that had rotted away   James N. • Gastonia , NC • February 16, 2015

The repair was simple. Having used Appliance Parts Pro in the past for much needed repair parts, I simply unplugged the machine, turned off the water and removed the drain hose and slid unit forward. I then removed the top control panel like last time, tilted the body forward and set it aside. I unfastened the upper hose to the water pump and slid what was left of the old shield out and slid the new replacement shield back into place then reattached the flex hose. The shield slipped right... Read more
