Got a new UI board and silicon pipe (the overlay that protects the UI board and has the rubber nodes that the plastic control buttons fit on) and voilà it worked. Hopefully this helps someone. I spent a lot of time looking for self help videos etc for a model with the "hidden in-line type heater" and NOT a "heating element" type model and there were none to be found. A GE tech diagnosed it and told me a new one was in order as multiple error codes were indicated including a new main board.
