I decided that the problem was either the control board (the controller) or the front panel, with the front panel being much more likely to be the culprit. The membrane contacts used in the front panel are subject to wear, and I could easily see how wear or contamination could cause the controller to think that a button had been pressed. Removed the screws,took off old front panel and replaced it with the new panel. Only took about 30 minutes to complete. It took about 15 minutes to find the right size screw driver.
