Researched this kenmore washer on-line and found the problem to be the lid switch. Saw a diagram on how to jump this switch by connecting a wire to both outside wires on the harness and voila! It worked! This is not a fix but it allowed me to finish the load of unwashed clothes and told me which part was bad (do not run washer jumped like this.......fire hazard!) Removed control knob that was broken also. Removed two screws and tilted top panel back. Removed two screws holding timer in place. Disconnected wiring harness from bad timer. Reconnected wiring harness to new timer. Used two new screws provided to place timer in position. Let top panel down and replaced two screws holding it down. Installed new control knob. Read more

First I looked at the many you tube vids, and there are many. appliance parts pros pretty much shows you how to deal with the parts. I changed the brake shoes and the clutch assembly which also comes with the driver cam. I also changed the metal brake operating cam. I think that brake lockup or improper brake release was the problem that broke the plastic cam driver. This was the broken plastic part making all the ticking noise.
