By: Frigidaire
Part Number: OEM17411691
Manufacturer Part Number: 241537103

The Cold Control is an OEM part for Frigidaire refrigerators. It regulates the temperature inside the fridge and freezer compartments by controlling the compressor, evaporator fan, and cooling vents. Proper cooling depends on the cold control operating reliably.

Symptoms of a bad cold control include:

  • Fluctuating temperatures that don't stay consistent
  • The refrigerator or freezer running excessively hot or cold
  • The compressor not turning on at all

Causes of failure can be worn over many years of use or damage to electronic components. Without an accurately functioning control, cooling performance diminishes significantly.

This OEM Frigidaire part can also be used on Electrolux, Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Westinghouse, and Sears/Kenmore.

Ted for Model Number frigidaire FRT18L4JWF

Own this fridge for 2 1/2 years . We keep it in our weekend house in the kitchen plugged in and the room is maintained at 50 degrees. When we open the fridge sat. morning to load for the weekend the fridge temp is about 40 and freezer 20 degrees. While we load it we hear the fan go on and after about an hour the temp reaches a more desireble 34 fridge and -10 freezer. This temp stays good for the whole weekend. Next weekend it gets warm again. We were told it is the cold control . Do you agree?

Answer

Ted, The cold control would most likely not be the cause. On top mount refrigerators you cycle the compressor and fan/fans from the food compartment temperature. When the room temperature gets colder than 55 F, you have long off times waiting for the food compartment to warm enough to trip the cold control. This long off time is allowing the freezer temperature to get high enough that food can start to defrost. There is a kit for refrigerators installed in applications where the temperature can go as low as 34 F and still maintain good freezer temperatures. The kit part number is 5303918301 and it contains a heater that mounts in the control box and an instruction sheet advising how to install the heater. The reason it will work the entire weekend is due to the ambient room temperature is elevated to above 55 degrees when you are there and once the temperature drops back down it will cause the issue to arise again.
