The Cold Control is an OEM part for Frigidaire refrigerators. It regulates the temperature inside the fridge and freezer compartments by controlling the compressor, evaporator fan, and cooling vents. Proper cooling depends on the cold control operating reliably.

Symptoms of a bad cold control include:

  • Fluctuating temperatures that don't stay consistent
  • The refrigerator or freezer running excessively hot or cold
  • The compressor not turning on at all

Causes of failure can be worn over many years of use or damage to electronic components. Without an accurately functioning control, cooling performance diminishes significantly.

This OEM Frigidaire part can also be used on Electrolux, Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Westinghouse, and Sears/Kenmore.

Corky, Thanks for the question!!! Maybe a defrost issue. Not sure the cold control would smell burnt. Here is a video link from our YouTube page that will help. https://youtu.be/fFNi50tdeto

Mike, If the compressor and the fans are running and it does not pull down cold enough then it would likely be a sealed system issue. You will likely need an EPA-certified tech for these repairs.

Al, it would be recommended that the air vent and return ducts are inspected for any blockages. If they are clear, the evaporator would need to be inspected for any sections blocked up with ice that could limit airflow. If everything checks out ok, it would be likely that the evaporator fan motor 241854301 is not operating efficiently.

Joseph, It is very likely that the airway to the refrigerator is blocked with ice. Either from a defrost drain problem or a defrost issue itself. You will need to remove the rear panel of the freezer and clear any ice has formed on the floor of the freezer and if solid ice has formed in the evaporator coils then a component of the defrost cycle has failed.

Berth for Model Number FFTR2021TW2

The temperature of the freezer can vary from -17 to 37 degrees in a few hours. The fridge part remains constant around 41 degrees. After I turn the cold control to get the compressor running, the compressor will not shut off till the cold control is way past the point where the compressor turned on. There is a frost pattern on the freezer coils. I'm thinking that the cold control needs to be replaced but I'm puzzled why the temp of fridge part remains almost constant. At $74 for the cold control, I'd like to get a second opinion.

Hello Beth, this sounds like the cold control is starting to fail, part 241537103. It only measures the air temp in the fresh food section, however, the freezer should not be able to reach that high a temperature.

Larry, the model number is incorrect or incomplete so we can't check or verify the part needed, but you are on track, the cold control is basically a single pole single throw switch. If the contacts "stick" closed, or the chemical in the capillary tube has leaked out, the switch remains closed and the compressor will continue to run. Thanks,

Jim, This issue would most likely be caused by a faulty defrost timer where the contacts are not making for the compressor to come on.

Barbara, try checking your door gaskets to make sure you have no gaps along the door seal, see if there is a drain issue, this will cause water to form under the crisper drawers, check the freezer evaporator to see if it is iced up, you may have a defrost problem which would cause your temps to rise.
