Symptoms of a bad oven probe are:

  • Inability to selectcooking modes like bake, roast or broil requiring temperature control

Tom for Model Number FGFLZ87GCA

My oven never gets up to temperature. If I set it to 400°F even after the indicator beeps telling me it has reached 400°F, the oven thermometer I purchased is only reading 250°F. After 20 minutes on 400°F it will eventually reach 300°F. I spoke with someone on the phone and they thought I may need part # AP3963654 : it's a sensor. Do you think this is the part I need to solve my problem. I was told it is in stock. I didn't think to ask the price. Thank you, Tom

Answer

Hello Tom, While the sensor is the most obvious part, I wouldn't replace it without testing it first. It should read about 1100 ohms at 70°F. If it reads more than 100 ohms difference (above or below), I would replace it. The thing they didn't mention on the phone is that the main control has to interpret the information sent to it by the sensor. First thing I would do is turn off the power to the unit for at least 10 minutes. If the microprocessor on the board isn't damaged, the discontinuation of power for 10 minutes will reset the microprocessor to factory default. Since the sensor 316490000 is an electrical component that is exposed to a great deal of heat, it might not be a bad idea to replace it first anyway. If this doesn't correct the problem, the next thing to do is trace the wiring to the sensor from the control board to insure no poor connections or wiring damage is present. If no problem is found there, the control 316418708 replacement is the option that will correct the issue.
