Hello Tom. When you remove the old one, if it's bad, it will rattle when you shake it. The ceramic disk has shattered inside the device... more if it rattles and will require replacement. If it doesn't rattle, you should check for voltage at the device. If voltage is there and the unit does not run, you will need to replace the compressor.
