Customer Questions and Answers for Magnetron by Ge

By: Ge
Part Number: OEM9610806
Manufacturer Part Number: WB27X10682

The Magnetron is an OEM replacement part for GE microwaves. It is responsible for generating the microwave energy used for cooking and heating food. Over time, magnetrons can wear down and become less effective.

Symptoms of a bad Magnetron include:

  • The microwave not heating food, even though it turns on and the timer counts down
  • Unusual noises, such as a loud hum or buzz, during operation
  • Burnt smells or smoke emanating from the microwave
  • Error codes on the microwave’s display indicating a heating issue

Causes for a malfunctioning Magnetron can include a burnt-out magnetron, issues with the high-voltage diode that powers it, or problems with the control board that regulates its operation

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Gregg K for Model Number JE2160

Hello: My microwave stopped heating in May, I distinctly noticed that it wasn't making the deep humming/buzzing noise that it usually made. I bought a magnetron, and a couple of days later a diode and a capacitor. I installed the magnetron, and the microwave worked, so I didn't install the diode or capacitor then. Over Thanksgiving, the microwave stopped heating again. This time I replaced the diode and capacitor, and put everything back together. It still did not heat, but after a few tries, and using the "Express" setting for 4 minutes, we heated a cup of water. Thinking it was fixed, I put it back in the cabinet. It did not heat. I took it back out, and checked the magnetron, the diode, and the capacitor to the extent I could (with an ohmmeter). All seems to be okay. I suspected a switch, and was getting ready to order the primary switch, but I noticed that the magnetron was warm to the touch, and the cooling fins were hot, so despite the fact that water wasn't being heated, it looks like the magnetron is getting power, which makes me think it's not a switch. Here is my post on the forum on the subject. Do y'all have any ideas? http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/microwave-repair/507764-microwave-wont-heat.html Thanks, Gregg

Answer

Hello Gregg. Based ont eh information you provided, if the magnetron, diode, and capacitor are new, and it finally heated the water, you will need to order and replace the H.V. Transformer on the unit.
