The Magnetron is an OEM replacement part for GE microwaves. It is responsible for generating the microwave energy used for cooking and heating food. Over time, magnetrons can wear down and become less effective.

Symptoms of a bad Magnetron include:

  • The microwave not heating food, even though it turns on and the timer counts down
  • Unusual noises, such as a loud hum or buzz, during operation
  • Burnt smells or smoke emanating from the microwave
  • Error codes on the microwave’s display indicating a heating issue

Causes for a malfunctioning Magnetron can include a burnt-out magnetron, issues with the high-voltage diode that powers it, or problems with the control board that regulates its operation

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Sat, Thanks for the question!!! The door switches are the best place to start when encountering a heat-related issue with a microwave. Use your wiring diagram to determine which are open and which is closed and test for continuity. The microwave will have two WB24X10146 and one WB24X10190.

Robert Hughes for Model Number PVM1790SR1SS

Unit works 100%. However, just today the 2011-mfg product will hum loudly when the door is closed. Turned off breaker for 1min+ and unit showed a cold restart. Closing the door again made the unit hum. Fan (both vent and internal units) sounds good, turntable works (note: turntable has been non-smooth in rotation with some small binding sounds). All buttons work properly. All timings and apparently power levels work properly. Do you have any ideas? I am an old heavy ground radar technician and IT consultant so I know my way around such machines, however, the 60Hz hum almost sounds like power leaking (transformer primary on? but Maggie would start up wouldn't it?).

Robert, If you are getting a humming when the door is closed then this will most likely be caused by a faulty door switch. This would be what would need to be tested and replaced if faulty.

Hello Leonard, to check this , unplug the microwave from power, then reach inside the oven and remove the waveguide cover on the right side, carefully inspect the antenna of the magnetron tube and the duct sidewalls for arc marks. If just on the antenna then the magnetron tube WB27X10682 is replaceable, if on the duct walls the microwave is not repairable.

Meresie, The most likely cause for the unit shutting completely off after 10 to 15 seconds would be a faulty control board WB27X10833.
