Rob for Model Number GE - model JGBS22BEH4WH Hi, I noticed a strong gas smell after turning on my oven. I'm not sure how much time passed between turning it on, and smelling the gas, but I was expecting the oven to be lit and warm. After smelling gas, I opened the door, and saw the glow from the igniter below. I have since used the oven about four times, and it has lit up without any gas smell. I even left the door open when I turned it on, and still couldn't smell any gas. Was this some kind of gas shut-off failure, or an igniter problem? Considering how strong the smell was, I wouldn't have thought the gas would come on if the igniter wasn't getting hot enough to light it.
Answer Rob, First, I would access the burner and closely look and see if there are any large holes or burned marks on the burner, if so replace the burner. Secondly, you may have a weak igniter. You can check the safety valve by turning on the bake element, check for 3.2-3.6 volts AC at the safety valve from the bake contact (Yellow) to the neutral contact {white}, if the proper voltage is there, replace the safety valve, if not replace the oven igniter.
