Manufacturer Part Number: WD21X10519

The Flood Switch Assembly is an OEM part for GE dishwashers that is responsible for detecting water levels in the dishwasher's base, preventing potential flooding by shutting off the water intake if an overflow is detected. This helps in avoiding water damage to your home and ensuring the dishwasher operates normally.

Symptoms of a bad Flood Switch Assembly include:

  • The dishwasher not filling with water
  • Water not draining properly
  • The dishwasher stops during a cycle

Causes of a bad flood switch assembly can vary from debris accumulation affecting the float's movement to electrical issues within the switch mechanism. Over time, wear and tear on the float or switch can lead to failures.

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

Greggva for Model Number GDT580SMF7ES

Should the switch/float travel the entire distance of the flood switch. I have read that new ones "rattle" when you shake them and mine did not and water was not coming into the washer. I used the probes on my multimeter to dislodge the float and which was stuck at the top and it "rattled" again. I reinstalled and it fills with water again. I am guessing it was sending a flooded signal to the water control valve. I am wondering if the float should have more travel though. I tested the center pins on the row of four and got ~11k ohms also.

Answer

Hello GreggVA, a stuck float switch will cause the control board to think the dishwasher is filled with water. If it was stuck and you were able to free it and now the dishwasher is working, then that was the only cause however it is likely to stick again, This could be due to food debris, hard water residue etc. You can try using a dishwasher cleaner but if it reoccurs just replace the float WD21X10519.
