Ed for Model Number Ldf6920st The dishwasher is making a high pitched whining noise about 2 minutes after normal wash startup. The noise starts slowly and then within a few seconds accelerates quickly and the noise gets louder. Then everything stops. No error is displayed. Upon opening the dishwasher, the water pan is full, and it appears that the top spray arm moved, but don't believe the bottom spray arm moved? I know the drain pump is working (continuity between pins, and watched the water drain into garbage disposal about 45 seconds into cycle startup that was left in the pan from a prior run when I stopped the cycle director the noise). Took the unit apart looking for "anything" unusual, and thought I found the issue as I found a small piece of wood (like wicker?) By the chopping blade. So I removed it , put everything back together, and thought I found the problem...but unfortunately not. The noise did come again, but did take slightly longer after cycle startup for the noise to begin....maybe 3 minutes instead of 2. I took off the circulation pump, but don't know how to test it to see if it's bad, or if the problem is the diverter or other? The impeller will spin freely and has no broken fins. The smaller white piece (valve) by the diverter I cannot turn by hand. Not sure if that's normal? Need help. Not certain what to order, (circulation pump, diverter, valve, other??? and,/or how to test the suspect part prior to ordering a replacement. Thanks for your help.
Answer Ed, the diverter 4681ED3001D should not move freely by hand as it is a motor-driven gear. It would be unlikely that the valve would be causing the issue due to the fact that the unit shuts down after a few minutes. The most likely items that are going to cause this noise is either going to be the motor windings 4681ED1004B, or an electrical issue in the main control 6871DD1006Q. The main control can be inspected for any signs of electrical burning, unfortunately, the manufacturer does not list the winding resistance for the motor. The best way to identify what would be causing the issue is to locate the specific section where the noise is originating from, as well as checking for any error codes on the display. Read More...
