Eric for Model Number Wm2016cw

Washer is making a god awful grinding and clunking noise when in the spin cycle. When watching it spin with the back cover off the washer spins a bit then starts jerking and skipping. I have gotten no error codes. The washer spins freely by hand and makes no abnormal sounds. I pulled and replaced the rotor but this did not solve the problem. My next guess is a bad stator. I pulled the stator and the magnets were pretty rusty on about half the stator. Cleaned the rusty areas with a wire brush, reinstalled but still ran the same. I see no broken wires or cracked magnets. Do you think it could be the stator anyway?

Answer

Eric, With there being rust on the stator it sounds more likely that there may be a small leak around the bearings and the bearings on the unit are failing to cause this issue.

Answer

Eric, No, we wouldn't expect the stator to be the issue since you cleaned and inspected it, and it worked. The more likely problem is a cracked or broken 4434ER0003C Spider Arm Assembly and worn out tub bearings MAP61913715 tub bearing, 4280EN4001B ball bearing and 4036ER2003A tub seal. With these worn and cracked or broken parts, the washer would make the noises you described during the "ramp-up" between the medium and high-speed RPMs of the spin cycle.
