Hello Bob. Yes, that is the instructions from the manufacture. The control panel and the front panel will need to be removed from the front of the unit. I have replaced these pumps from under the washer. You will need to lean the washer backwards and brace it so it does not fall and go through the hole in the bottom to do it that way. However, it is much easier to replace through the front, but you have to disassemble the washer to do it through the front.
