Joe for Model Number Whirlpool Washer Model LSR8233JQ0 My wife did laundry last night and the washer worked fine. On the 2nd load the washer filled up fine. It would not agitate, spin or drain. When we adjusted the knob to try to have it spin and drain the water it just made a humming sound. I know the lid switch is in good order because I replaced it 2 months ago with the help of one of your videos. I'm guessing that the capacitor 8572717 has gone bad. How can I check to see if that is the problem? I would rather replace the capacitor than purchase a new machine. However, if the problem is due to a faulty motor or transmission I would probably just buy a new machine.
Answer Hello Joe, Since the unit is humming and will not drain, the first place to check is the drain pump. It is common for debris including buttons and parts of zippers to get into this area. In many cases, clearing the pump/sump area will correct the issue. Other cases require the replacement of the drain pump WP3363394. Very few capacitors fail on the motor but when the issue is capacitor related, it is normally a broken wire to it or a poor connection. To test the capacitor, remove all wires from the capacitor and short the two terminals with a screwdriver. Use an ohm meter from one terminal to the other. The reading on a good capacitor will start with a resistance reading that quickly fades to infinity. Reverse the meter leads on the terminals and test again. If the same thing happens, it is assumed to be a good capacitor. If either direction shows no contact or a complete circuit with a consistent reading, the capacitor WP8572717 has failed. Read More...
