Kevin for Model Number 11082826102

Replacing failed dryer heating element for the second time within two years in my Kenmore Elite HE3. The element support plate was cracked and partially melted from excessive heat(?)and the element coil had breaks in it. I replaced thermal cut-off and high limit thermostat the last time. Continuity checks good for those, the thermal fuse, and the thermistor. Any idea what is causing the element to overheat and fail? Do I need to replace the machine control electronics? There was good continuity between red wires from machine control(?)and ground wires at heating element as well as thermal cut-off and high limit thermostat. I really hate to have to continue to replace the heating element ever year or so, not to mention the concern of a possible fire. Appreciate any help.

Answer

Kevin, The first thing would be to check the exhaust vent size, length and condition. If you have access to a clamp on amp meter, you could check for a 22 to 24 amp draw when the element is on and heating. The amp draw will verify the wiring and element condition. You would also want to check the exhaust temperature, with the drum empty, and the exhaust vent connected to the dryer, the avrage exhaust temp. on regular/high heat should be 155 dgrs.F. If all's OK, we'd need to look at a possible usage issue . Thanks and Good Luck
