Steve Ward for Model Number MTW5870TWO

For about 4 months my washer would fail to spin on heavy loads, leaving clothes soaked. Recently it began failing to spin occasionally on lighter loads, and progressively got worse. The motor would be running during spin cycle and would stoop if I lifted lid. The coupler looks fine. As far as I can tell, the clutch looks like new. What specifically should I be looking for on clutch? Where should I go from here? My next step is to look at basket drive and get a look at top side of brake for any debris. What do you suggest? Thanks!

Answer

Steve, You also need to check and see if there is a small article stuck between the two tubs. Did you ctually take the coupler apart and check the three "legs" for damage, At this point, you will need to lower the transmission and check the clutch plate, brale shoes an spin tube bearings and shaft. Here's a Repair Forum post to help you out. [http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/washer-repair/3265-replacing-direct-drive-washer-brake-shoes.html ] Thanks and Good Luck
