By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM13170048
Manufacturer Part Number: 6-2095720

The Mounting Stem Repair Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It includes all necessary components to repair the mounting stem, which is a critical part of the washer's tub support system. Comes with the hub assembly, seal, and spanner nut. 6-2040130 should also be replaced at the same time. A spanner wrench is required to complete the repair TB123B.

Symptoms of a bad mounting stem include:

  • Excessive noise or vibration during the spin cycle.
  • The washer tub appearing loose or off-balance.
  • Leakage around the central area of the washer, indicating a possible seal failure.

Causes of a bad mounting stem can include wear and tear from normal usage, especially with heavy loads, or corrosion and material fatigue that weaken the stem's integrity.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Cody T for Model Number LSE7800ACL

First of all, I purchased parts from you because of the videos and other graphics - thanks. I just installed the seal and bearing kit, but now the basket won't spin. Could I have damaged the transmission or something else while installing? I turned the trans by hand and it sounds like the basket is rubbing on the tub, and while it was in the spin cycle there was some metal noise from the trans. Should I remove the trans cover, or will oil leak? Ever heard of this before?

Answer

Cody, Yes, we've heard of this before. If you remove the cover plate on the transmission housing, Yes, oil will leak out, you'll need to remove the washer, lay it on it's back and then you can remove the cover, but you most likely won't need to anyway. The more likely issues are, the tub cover is too low in the outer tub, and the top of the inner basket is rubbing or catching on the bottom side of the tub cover. There should be a 9/16 to 5/8 inch gap between the top of the spin basket and the bottom of the tub cover. Also, you may have over tightened the mounting stem, install the mounting stem hand tight, then "tap" the spanner wrench once or twice with the hammer, that's all that's needed. If you over torque the mounting stem, you could "mushroom" the bearing sleeve and create excess noise and wear. When you remove the stem to check the sleeve, you may want to drop a few drops of turbine oil into the sleeve and bearing area, this will act like "break in" oil and help keep the washer operating properly.
