Symptoms of a bad drip pan include:

  • Visible cracks, holes, or warping in the pan

Rick F for Model Number MFX2570AEM3

I own 2012(Dec-28) Maytag Model MFX2570AEM3 four door French door design with exterior water leaking issues. I have already performed clogged evaporator drain clean out per YouTube video. On final inspection of the back access per the repair procedure, I saw W10296785 evaporator pan had hairline crack indications. I taped cracks with electrical tape. I had no leaking for a week, and then observed limited additional leaking. I have done more tape repair now, but I await more issues to appear, expecting that the pan needs to be replaced. Question: Do I need to repair that tips the back of the unit for underneath access using 4x4s or should I be able to use the *simpler* process that twists out the evaporator fan housing to allow pan access and replacement? The repair process of tipping the unit, with perhaps compressor unscrewing, sounds like hire a repairman. Moving the freon discharge tube a little to release the pan is not too concerning for DIY.

Answer

Rick, With this repair, the most efficient and easiest way to replace the drain pan would be to unplug unit and take the rear cover off. The unit will need to be tilted forward and blocked up. You would then remove the screws from the back lower corners and remove 2 screws at the bottom of the unit. This will allow the compressor base to lower, no need to remove the compressor for this repair. Once the base is dropped you would then be able to remove the drain pan along with the condenser fan and then twist the condenser fan out of the drain pan, install the new pan and twist the condenser pan back in. Reinstall the screws and reassemble the unit.
