Thanks For Help for Model Number Whirlpool ED25RFXFW00

Dear Sir, Here is the description of the problem. Please tell me if you can may help to determine the root cause based on the below. Refrigerator stopped cooling completely. The light is on when the door is open and the fan in the back is running. The condenser is warm. There is a click sound from the condenser a few seconds after powering on the refrigerator, and then a few second later, another click sound, and then again click sound a few seconds/minute later .... The compressor seemed do not start, however, though it is warm but not vibrating. Thanks.

Answer

Thanks for Help,You're going to need a multi meter to test the compressor motor windings to determine if the issue is the compressor or the relay overload. First remove power to the refrigerator. remove the compressor compartment cover, then the palstic relay/overload cover WP2162358 off the side of the compressor, DO NOT disconnect any wires from the relay W10920279 or overload WP2183456, grasp the relay and pull straight out until the relay releases from the motor pins, repeat for the overload. Go to the single pin on the compressor and check to one of the pins that are side by side on the compressor. The run winding will read 1-5 ohms resistance. Then stay on the single pin and go to the other pin. The start winding will read 3-11 ohms resistance. Then check each of the pins to the compressor casing (You may have to scrape or sand a bare spot on the metal case). You should have an "open" circuit (infinite resistance). If your readings are out of these ranges, or you read resistance between one of the pins and the case, then you have a bad compressor. If they are within these ranges, then you have a bad relay overload. Rule of thumb is to replace both at the same time for a positive, long term repair.
