Diyfixer for Model Number 106.56986600

My Refrigerator started knocking upon startup. I had a repair main come out and of course it would not do it. $109 for him to tell me, if it is cooling probably your options are. Options, 1) buy a new compressor. for the price would not be worth it for a 10 year old fridge. 2) Buy a new fridge. Why if it is still cooling? 3) Live with it. Which is what I have been doing. Then I got to thinking. It does not sound like something out of balance on the compressor. It actually sounds like it is cutting on and off real fast and then I hear a final click and it runs just as smooth as always. So my question is. Could this be a bad start relay? Is there any other part that could play a part in this symptom, like a capacitor, overload, etc? What would you recommend to start with?

Hello Ben, this sounds like a power loss/short in the ref wiring. Start by unplugging ref from power, access the rear of the ref cabinet, remove the rear compressor cover and check where the rear wiring harness plugs into the lower cabinet for any problems, such as loose terminals , overheated wire insulation, plug not locked in /loose. If ok then next you will do the same checks on wiring for the ref ceiling-mounted control area, then in the freezer remove the rear evap cover and check the wiring connections there. If no problems are found and the ref is still having the same symptoms then there is an internal wiring problem and the ref would be considered unrepairable.

Hello Mike, This is an issue with the relay on the control board 8201661. I'm sorry but this part has been discontinued by the manufacturer and no satisfactory substitutions have been provided. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Hello Gary, If the compressor has never been changed it will not require a start capacitor. If it has, you will need to order WP4387764 if the capacitor requires replacement. When connecting the start relay, the wire will need to be connected to terminal number 2.

Reggie, The overload and start relay are located inside the plastic cover on the side of the compressor W10309988. Make sure you remove power to the refrigerator, you may need a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the retaining clip that holds the cover to the compressor. You may find it easier to remove the assemblies from the compressor pins, then switch the wires, one at a time from the original to the replacement part, then re install the new components.

Hello Danel. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the evaporator coils in the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Chad, You should check for 120Vac at the compressor on the blue wire. If the voltage is present you should replace the start device WPW10197428. If not, check the wiring from the board to the compressor for issues.

Hector, If the start relay has been replaced and the compressor is not starting but the relay is getting power then this will be a faulty compressor.

Karen for Model Number 10657765790

We started smelling a strong rubber burning smell and identified it was the refrigerator. On further inspection we removed the relay cover from the Compressor and found the push on start relay (WP2262185) was burned and melted. We have 6 OHMS resistance between the white and blue terminals on the compressor. We are trying to identify if ordering a new relay will solve the issue, or with 6 OHMS of resistance, would we need to do another repair? Thank you
