Manufacturer Part Number: WP8577274

The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Answer

Edward, with the power supply cord unplugged, it would be recommended that the thermistor is tested from the main control WP8546219 as this will allow the identification of if the failure is a wire issue or a main control issue. The red wire with a white stripe and the black wire immediately next to it at connection P2 will be used. If the resistance shows the same, the failure is in the main control (unfortunately, the main control has been discontinued and is no longer available). If the resistance shows 0 or OL, the failure is in one of the wires. Unfortunately, the main harness 8299926 has been discontinued but it could possibly be repaired using a hi-temp connector if the wires do not have a loose connection.
