Manufacturer Part Number: WP8577274

The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Part Number: OEM18040551)

1 Answer

Dee, The first thing to check is to make sure that the venting is clear from the blower wheel to the outside of your home. Then check to see if the thermal fuse on the blower has continuity and if there is no continuity then it is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Al, There is not a service panel, you will need to remove the top and the front. Then, remove the tub to get down to the blower housing, and the thermistor is located on the back side of the blower housing.

Al for Model Number WGD95HEDW0

Through your troubleshooting guides I believe I need to test/replace the thermistor. However, my dryer is not like the one pictured in the video on how to replace the part. The difference is mine does not have a small lower panel. It looks to me like everything below the control panel needs to be removed. I'm not sure what screws do or do not need to be removed. Is there possibly a different video that would show how to disassemble what I've got? S/N M43103482

1 Answer

Al, Yes, you would remove the top, the control panel, and then the front to gain access.

Hello Shaun, the error code F01 refers to an internal failure of the main control board.

PF is for power failure, if the code cannot be cleared then the issue would be with the control board WPW10654005. Before replacing the control make sure the power cord and terminal block are good and that proper power is at the outlet.

Joshua, If this is occurring in the auto cycle then the sensor bars would be the most likely cause for this. If this is in any cycle then the main board will be the most likely cause.

Todd, Look for a damaged wire or a heating element that may be grounded. Also, make sure that your ducting from the lint trap to the outside of your home is clean and free of obstruction.

Adrian for Model Number 110.60972990 Kenmore Elite Electric

So my problem started about a month ago. My older electric dryer stopped heating up. We got it used- so I did some research and decided to replace the heating element and all of the fuses and thermostats to be safe. So I did. And it worked, for about 5 minutes then stopped heating again. The dryer will still spin just no heat. Then I opened up the dryer more cleaned it out better, cleaned out the exiting vent (corrugated metal) and tested the fuses and thermostats with a multimeter (lots of Youtube videos) and discovered that I tripped the thermostat on the blower and the one in the back by the heating element, hi temp I think. So I bought and installed replacements for those and started right up again and stopped again. So I'm typing this very frustrated not sure why it's overheating cause that's obviously what it's doing and I'll have to replace those 2 pieces again. There's no obstructions- I checked again. Please help.

Adrian, Check the venting that goes to the outside of the home. There could be an obstruction there that could be causing this issue to occur. Double-check the thermostats and make sure that they are not open. If they are not then it is likely there could be a problem with the centrifugal switch on the motor that would require the motor to be replaced.

Adrian, unfortunately, the model provided is not showing as a valid model number. If the number could be verified and provided in a new post, it may allow more accurate information to be presented. Generally speaking, an electric dryer will have a thermal fuse that can not be reset, and a cycling thermostat which is an automatically resetting part. Usually, when the thermal fuse trips, it is due to the air vent or duct being clogged up which can be cleared out.

V, Thanks for your question. Sorry, the thermistor is not a replacement for the cycling thermostat.
