Manufacturer Part Number: WP8577274

The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Answer

Ben, The thermistor WP8577274 is a mineral based control device. It produces a certain amount of resistance, based on temperature and wether the device is a NTC (negative thermal coefficient) or PTC (positive thermal coefficient). In your dryer it determines the drum temperature, based on the resistance from the drum heat and informs the control board when to cycle the heater off and on. What seems to be the issue ? Thanks and Good Luck

Hi Ben. Dryer Thermistor - Located on the blower housing next to the thermal fuse. Item Number: WP8577274. At 77° it reads 10,000 ohms. It acts as a cycling thermostat which regulates the heat circuit on/off relay on the main control board. If it does not read within 5- % within spec's , then replace it. Thank You.
