The Thermistor is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This temperature-sensitive sensor monitors conditions inside refrigerator and freezer compartments. It provides critical feedback to the electronic control module, regulating cool air temperature in both sections.

Symptoms of a faulty thermistor include:

  • Fluctuating temperatures where sections become too warm or cold
  • Frequent cycling of evaporator fans and cooling components
  • Defrost issues or Er/Ed error codes shown on displays

Causes can involve regular exposure to changing interior environments over many years. Mineral deposits accumulating may lead to sensor surfaces becoming insulated. Physical stress from overloading could potentially crack the thermistor over time as well.

This OEM replacement part is compatible with some Kenmore Elite models too.

Shane for Model Number GC3PHEXNS00

I am wondering if a faulty thermistor might be causing my temperature issue. I set my control board to 37 degrees for the fridge, and my freezer is set to 2 degrees, but control board reads that it's in the 50's for the fridge and 14 degrees for freezer. The actual temperature is way colder and getting below freezing in the fridge. My evap fan is working and constantly running (not sure if that is normal) and air baffle is working. I am hoping it's not the control board though.

Answer

Hello Shane. Based on the information you provided, it does sound like the thermistor is bad. However, you can test the thermistor and if it is good, then you will replace the board. Thermistor Temperature Resistance 77°F..................10,000 ohms 36°F..................29,500 ohms 0°F....................86,300 ohms You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
