Hello Lisa, While the primary valve WP12544001 normally fails before the secondary WP12544101, both have to open and close to allow water to come through. If water is getting through enough to make ice clumps, the manufacturer says both valves should be replaced since the water has to pass through both of them to get there. One valve was probably partially bad before the other failed.
