How to Troubleshoot & Replace Frigidaire AP6799886 / 5304518034 Defrost Timer

Replaced evaporator fan motor and temperature control which was slightly rusted. Also replaced defrost timer as the unit was 15 years old and do not want another attempt. Now the freezer is working good. 

I replace the timer myself and it’s been running for the past two days. 

Replaced gaskets. I was careful to check that the new gaskets fit before removing the old ones. They fit perfectly. Caution: The gaskets snap into a plastic receptor that snaps into the door - don't remove this plastic piece. I used a screwdriver to remove the first gasket, then realized the gasket easily comes out with the right finger pressure. 

Replacing the compressor start relay was the actual fix but it's a really old freezer so replacing the defrost timer whole I have it opened up was just inexpensive preventative maintenance. 

I ordered a run capacitor and defrost timer

I ordered the defrost timer and put it on and it fixed the problem. It was an easy fix! 

I chatted with one of your reps who told me there was no replacement for the defrost timer for my old fridge. I looked at two of the parts you did carry and decided to order both. The timer in my refrigerator was hidden behind a metal shield so the exact model wasn't apparent. I could find no paperwork that came with the fridge. When the parts arrived quickly from you folks I dismantled the timer assembly and found one of the timers fit the space. The original appears to be a 9Amp 120v which may have a 12-hour cycle time and 21-minute defrost. The new timer Defrost Timer 215846604 fits the bill even though it may have a 10amp with a 6-hour cycle time, an additional defrost cycle is not worrisome. The original part had an exposed metal housing for the motor and a grounding wire to the metal shield housing. That was no longer needed and so was removed. The second timer ordered, Defrost Timer 5304518034/ AP6799886 will not be needed as it did not fit the space behind the metal housing in the top back of the refrigerator compartment. I should add that the metal shield also holds the compartment light socket and so cannot be modified efficiently. All is well now. Cooling and defrost cycles are working. 

I replaced the defrost timer. The component was directly accessible from the back of the freezer at the bottom. I used a stubby screwdriver to remove the timer and the metal mounting bracket. The new timer was a direct replacement without the mounting bracket. After unplugging the freezer, the total time was about 5 minutes and after plugging it back in the difference was noticable within a few hours. Because it wasn't defrosting adequately before, it dripped out the front during the first few defrost cycles after the repair, but quit dripping after that. 

I replaced the Defrost Timer. While I had it thawed out, I went ahead and changed the thermostat also. Did a thorough cleaning as well.
