How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP2031021 / WB44X173 Oven Broil Element

By using the websites online appliance model number search function and excellent schematic, I bought the right parts. The parts were shipped via APO to me in Banja Luka. Thirty minutes later, both elements were replaced and it works great. One single nut driver was used. 

This was an easy repair that took only 5 min to change. 

Before I replaced the entire oven that has lasted this long. I checked to see if they still have replacement parts for my ~60-year-old oven. Thankfully GE still makes a replacement part that fits my model. I ordered both the bake and broiler elements to give my oven a refresh. The repair took less than 30 minutes. Elements work great. 

Disconnect power, removed oven door, taped stovetop eye units down to keep them in place. Tilted stove and laid back on the floor. Using 1/4” flex bit, removed screws holding bake element in place. Removed both wires from the bake element. Removed broil element using the same tool. Replaced both elements with new GE appliance parts pro elements. Tilted stove back up on feet. Returned oven racks back into positions. Reconnected power. Tested both elements to confirm the operation. Removed tape from stovetop eye elements. Pushed stove back into the opening. The total time spent about 35 minutes. Note: Laying stove on its back made it very easy to install the broil element. This step not necessary to change the lower bake element only. 

I am a 75 year old woman and I had no problem installing the new broiler element. Maybe ten minutes because had a little trouble reaching the rear of the oven. 

It was an easy repair, even though this was the first time I fixed a range. After unplugging the power cord, it was just a matter of removing a support, the bad element and two wires and then reversing the process with the new element. It was slightly awkward working inside the over to connect the wires. Other than that, every thing went very smoothly. 

Bought 2 new oven elements and replaced them. 

Replaced elements 

I replaced both elements and the light socket in about 45 minutes.The light socket was super easy. 

I replaced both bake and broil elements. The oven itself was probably 40 years old. The broil element was so old it was beginning to bend down, like it was melting. I removed the oven from the wall and unscrewed the elements, unhooked the wires, then installed new elements in reverse order. Thirty minuets from start to finish.
