How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP6988477 / WB21X36771 Range Infinite Heat Switch Kit

Replaced two switches on GE slide-in range. Took about 45 minutes to remove old and install new switches. Unable to use adapters but, knobs fit over shortened shafts and work fine. 

REPLACE BURNER CONTROL. 

Replaced the switch. 

Shut off power to stove and moved it away from wall. Then removed back panel. Noted wires were not aligned the same on the old switch as they were on the replacement switch. Labeled each wire on the old switch using the labels on the old switch. Removed the old switch and placed it side by side with new switch to measure height of stem. Used two vise grip plyers to break off excess stem. Placed orange collar that came with kit onto the new stem. Next placed each of the labeled wires into the new switch using their correct corresponding label. Attached switch to front of stove using the two provided screws. Turned power back on to check that switch was operating correctly. Then turned power off again and reattached back panel and put stove back into position and turned power back on again. Only concern going into this project was whether I would need to use one of the stem adapters and how much off the stem to break off. That all worked itself out once I had the old and the new switch side by side. 

Replaced burner and oven heater element. 

Purchased new switch control. Off, Low Med. etc. Replaced switch. The job was easier that I anticipated. Now it works great. You need a set of metric wrenches or you could use a pair of pliers to take back cover of stove off. 

(1) Replaced surface unit receptacle, which is accessible by removing one screw. Cut off the old receptacle, strip 3/8" cladding off wires with wire cutters, twist ends together and cap. Push insulating sleeves over cap and heat with lighter until tight. Replace receptacle, burner hardware and test. All good. (2) Removed 4 screws from ends of dial panel cover and the 5 dials. Removed 4 screws from the two center switches, which allowed easy access to switches on the back of the panel. Removed 2 screws from the faulty switch, transferred wires to the new switch, then mounted it. Put the panel back into position and replaced all remaining screws.Had a problem in the past with the extra-long notched shaft on the switch breaking in the wrong spot, so I used a small hacksaw to cut it at the desired length. Replaced the dials and tested. All good. 

We ordered the surface unit switch kit and with a little help from the website, had it installed and the burner working like normal. The unit looks a little different from our old one but it was easy to install once we saw some other information on the site. 

My stove's front burner was working erratically. It would turn on, then off; 4 minutes later, it would turn on again, then immediately off. Then 2 min. later, on again, etc. I did some initial research of the problem on Youtube (thank goodness for youtube!) and quickly understood that the problem was the switch kit. So I looked up the part on the internet and your company came up. I had made a purchase from you about 4 years ago. So I ordered this part and really appreciated the video on how to install this part on your website. My husband works up to 10 hrs a day, and I like challenges, so I thought I would take the repair on myself. I think I replaced the switch in 20 minutes.
