How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP3964635 / WH49X10042 Washer Agitator Coupler Kit

If you carefully pull the plastic agitator directly up and off the center column, you will expose the plastic agitator coupler. Plastic ridges on the inside of the agitator coupler slide onto the metal agitator stem. After years of use the ridges on the plastic coupler wore off so it not longer connected to the metal stem. Remove the 1/2" nut from the top of the coupler, pull off the old coupler and slide the replacement part on. The replacement comes with its own nut/screw which is slightly different than the original. Screw in the screw, align the plastic agitator column and slide it back on. Repair time, about 10 minutes. Cost: about $13 including shipping. 

Take a rope or strap and place it underneath the agitator, jerk on the rope to pull the agitator out. Remove the bolt on top of the coupling and pull the coupling off. Look inside of the coupling and check the teeth and spline. The coupling should not spin freely on the shaft, if it does your coupling is bad. Replace coupling and reinstall agitator. Done 

Replaced the washer agitator coupler. The old one was stripped out and not gripping the agitator like it should. I removed the agitator by removing the 7/16 bolt holding agitator in tub. Then pulled up on agitator and replaced coupler. Real easy. Took about 15 mins and washer works fine.

Checked to make sure belt was on. Dogs were fine on the upper portion of agitator, but then noticed the bottom half of agitator would spin freely both directions. Removed agitator, unscrewed one screw that holds this part on and removed it, saw it was quite worn. Replaced with this part and works like new! 

Unplugged the washer. Pulled the agitator off, removed the bolt holding the agitator coupling on, and pulled the coupling off. Replaced with nice new coupling, replaced bolt, and snapped the agitator back on. Can't believe how easy this was. I almost went out and bought a new washer.

Looked up model number and saw parts diagram Found and ordered part 

Replaced the coupler and cleaned out area where the coupler is installed. 

New coupler went on so easy. Agitator snapped right on and stayed in place.
