A waxy brown scrud residue had built up on the outside of the washer drum and bottom of drum "pulsator assembly." Running the cleaning cycle was not effective to remove all of the flakes. I had to remove the drum and pulsator assembly and scrub clean using a large brush, toothbrush and hot soapy water. After reassembling the washer, the problem continued because the scrud was also on the inside of the pulsator assembly, which is a sealed unit. I purchased a new pulsator assembly and pulsator cap to fix the problem. A new pulsator cap was necessary because I damaged the original part removing it from the washer, the plastic tabs had broken off. Once these parts were installed, the problem of waxy brown flakes was solved.
