After diagnosing the issue as a bound-up drum support roller, I initially removed the wheel itself from the fixed axle, cleaned off the accumulated lint & hair, added some molybdenum grease (not lithium which dries out in hot environments), and re-assembled the unit.
That fix proved to only temporary, sadly, but I had ordered 2 replacement rollers in any case. The faulty support roller was at the back of the machine, which requires almost twice as many steps as replacing the front rollers, so I replaced both rollers at the same time and kept the second original roller as an emergency backup.
