How to Troubleshoot & Replace Lg AP4439732 / 4986ER0004G Door Boot Seal

After researching the issue on YouTube. I assumed that I had a bad bearing and found the disassembly videos on this website. I'm not the handiest person in the world but the video gave fairly clear instructions and I was able to get my machine completely taken apart in about 4 hours. Once I got the inner drum separated from the outer shell I found that my problem was NOT the bearings but the spider arm. Mine had corroded and cracked on 2 of the 3 arms. I tried to remove the spider arm from the stainless steel drum, but the bolts wouldn't come out. So I had to order the entire assembly. My door boot seal was dirty and moldy so I figured I'd replace it while the machine was apart. The parts arrived in 2 days and I followed the video to reassemble the machine. The only problem I ran into was installing the inner part of the door boot seal. It wasn't clear from the video what part of the seal was being tucked where so I did what I THOUGHT was right and had the seal come off when I tested the machine. This caused a minor flood but once I got the seal installed correctly the machine washes like new!! 

I followed the directions in the washing machine videos that are posted on AppliancePartsPros.com. The videos were produced professionally and easy to follow. So far everything is working as they are supposed to. 

An easier way to remove/replace the retaining ring for the door boot seal than shown on videos with screwdriver and visegrip is to use "paint can openers" with bottle opener on one side and small hook on the other. For removal, pry from under the spring - since it is rounded, it is less likely to damage seal then screwdriver. For installation, simply insert the hook beneath the retaining hoop and run it around the channel in the door boot seal. Using a second opener for the other hand makes it even easier. 

Place the order from Appliance Parts Pros and received them overnight. The videos and diagram's allowed for a quick replacement of the new components. Had the washing machine back up and running in 2 hours. The repair group that I have my service contract with said they could get to me in a couple of weeks. They will no longer be providing the service to me. Thanks for the great service. 

Replaced the tub while watching the video. Very easy steps to follow, well worth doing it my self. Take your time and pay attention to what you are doing.

Followed the video provided on Appliance Parts Pros and fixed my washer in a few hours. Installing the gasket was very tricky as it has to be attached in a very particular manner. If you are going to replace the spider it makes sense to do the bearings even if they are good and install new gaskets too. This way the machine will be like new and you not have to go back into this depth of work again anytime soon. 

I called a local appliance service which diagnosed the problem as a "broken spider" that was allowing the drum to wobble and rub on the door seal. He quoted $450 to repair it and it would have to come back to the shop. They could pick it up in a day or two and I should allow 5 days for the repair. 5+ days was not going to work for us. I went on line and found a step by step instruction on how to replace the spider and some hints on to which parts I should get. Befor I went back to work, I had to come home for the service guy, I ordered all but the door seal as there wasn't a seal leak. When I told my wife I ad not ordered the seal she insisted I get a new one as the old one was black and she was unable to get to clean. Second order placed. All of the parts were here within 2 days. Repair took 3 to 4 hours as it is not a small job but the ApplianceParstPros video was excellent and I didn't once feel like I had a mess on my hands. The only hitch was the door gasket had an extra drain at the bottom that my unit didn't have and I missed that it wasn't plugged off like the other "extra" hose connections on the replacement gasket. Medium leak during the test was resulted in a rushed partial disassembly only to find the unplugged hole. I plugged it with the cut off end of a sharpie barrel and was back up and running. Total down time about 3 days. I rated this as medium difficult repair but I am fearless in diving into this kind of stuff. Thanks ApplianceParstPros. 

I was getting the TE error code. At first I was able to reset the washer and then run a manual rinse cycle to drain the tub, but it kept getting worse. Finally it would not reset at all. Looking online, I saw another commenter say it was the thermistor. Other places said it was the drain pump. I replaced both because the thermistor was cheap and easy to replace and the error seemed to occur when the pump activated. A problem with the pump seemed likely. Since I needed to remove the door gasket to get at the pump, see the video on the site, I opted to replace it too. Ours was stinky. Honestly the gasket was the hardest of the three to replace.
