How to Troubleshoot & Replace Samsung AP7020625 / DA61-14306A Refrigerator Drain Tube Clip

Samsung should be sued for selling refrigerators that they know has a design problem with the defrost drain clip. The one that came on it does not get close to the drain tube so over time the tube will freeze up and the water from the defrost cycle has no where to go but inside the refrigerator itself. Mine collects in the left crisper drawer. Anyway this part I ordered went on very easy. You can find some video's on youtube to give you some idea what it will take to complete the task. The easy way is to have a backup refrigerator in the garage like we do. Unplug the Samsung and take all shelves and drawers, put a couple of towels at the bottom where the drawers were, leave the door's open over night. It will take this long for the ice to melt enough to get the coil cover inside the refrigerator off without any issue. Take a turkey baster (syringe) and squirt warm water in drain hole until it unplugs. Take some wire snips (I used a stake-on tool) and clip existing aluminum drain clip off. Slide new one on and wrap ends around the defrost element. This clip is long enough to reach inside the drain tube approximately 1 inch. I put this on over a week ago and no sign of water yet. I ordered another clip for a friend who has a Samsung with same problem. It is an easy task if you just take your time and research the youtube video's. 

After emptying the fridge, I took out all drawers and shelves. Then I removed the 4 screws holding the "twin chill" panel on. There are three screws at the bottom and one at the top that's hidden behind a plastic cap. After removing the screws, I gently pried the "twin chill" cover off, starting at the bottom left and working my way around. Be careful not to pull to hard as there are wires connected from the fridge body to the top left of the panel. I then used wire snips to remove the old metal piece that was attached to the heating element (it was riveted on, but a good pair if diagonal cutters will take it off just fine). I then used a half cup of hot water to clear any ice out of the drain and installed this piece with the tongue sticking down into the drain. Make sure that the new piece is making good contact with the heating element bar. Then I reassembled the fridge. It has worked great. Two weeks so far and our crisper drawer is bone dry. 

I replaced the old drain clip after thawing out the frozen drain with a hair dryer and installing the new drain clip. The new clip is larger and should prevent freeze ups when the heater kicks in to remove moisture. This is a very common problem with a large number of Samsung units as I found out. Samsung was not very helpfull in light of the fact that this should have been a recall fix. Thawing took most of the repair time 

Surfed the net on the problem and found the repair solution on Appliancepartpros website. This apparently is a common problem on this model. The drain would freeze up and would not allow the water / moisture to be removed from the cooling coils during the defrost cycles. The site showed a simple fix of a clip that connects / clips to the defrost heater line at the bottom of thee coil and fits into the drain. The intent is that the clip is a heat conductor and will assist in preventing the drain hole from icing up at the drain hole. I just installed the clip which took all of 1 minute once I removed the coil cover and block of ice from the coils. Removing the cover so as not to damage the styrofoam insulation vent pad was 95% of the labor. The order was accurate and they delivered the part within 2 days even though I used regular shipping. Very good service! 

Ordered the part from you and watched the video which was very good. From start to finish it only took 1 hour and 10 minutes. The turkey baster idea for unfreezing the drain tube worked great. The new part fit perfectly and now everything is working fine. 

After over-googling the issue I figured out the drain hole getting clogged from freeze up was the problem. I then googled the part # and this site was recommended so I went with it and order the aluminum extended thawing attachment thingy. Pulled all the drawers, shelves and panels out. After receiving the part on time as promised I installed the clip and had everything back in the fridge in 15 minutes. Easy as pie and has been dry for 5 days!!! Great service and product was as described. Thanks a lot. Thought I was going to have to buy a maytag. 

Following the experience and instructions from many videos and APP commentors, I removed all shelves to access the evaporator cover at the inside rear of the refrigerator. Using caution not to damage the insulation or plastic clips, remove the cover and disconnect the wiring harness. I used needle nose pliers to remove the existing (poorly designed) clip at the bottom of the evaporator heater. The longest part of the job involved the clearing of the drain prior to installing the new, longer, better conducting clip. I used standard aquarium air tubing, snaking it down the drain (which goes to the right) and alternating adding and removing hot water with a turkey baster. Once the icy drain clog was melted, I installed the new clip so that the tabs on the ends wrapped snugly around the heater tube so that more heat is now transferred to the condensation drain to prevent a recurrence of this icing which created the interior flooding. 

Replaced the clip with the longer part. The original clip was short and did not extend into the drain. Ice had built up in the line and plugged it, then the drain tray iced over, and then condensation had no where to go but into the bottom of the refrigerator. I thawed the drain line with hot water and a turkey baster - worked well, maybe five minutes of squirting hot water into it. The old clip was aluminum and riveted on - I carefully nibbled it off with side cutters - about a minute. The new clip had tabs that needed to be wrapped around the heating element. I pre-bent them a tad (because the space is tight) and used needle nose pliers to carefully wrap then tightly to the heating element - about five minutes. I carefully squeezed the clip to the element to ensure good contact. Put it all back together. The hardest part, and most time consuming, is taking all the food and stuff out of the fridge. Plus the wife wanted to clean the insides and throw out expired stuff. 

I took off the freezer door and then took off the back panel that covers the evaporater there are 2 wire clips you have to remove as well. I could see water sitting in the tray that leads to the drain. I boiled the kettle and used a turkey Baster and started to pour water in the tray. Eventually the water started to come out the drain at the back off the fridge. You can see this drain by removing bottom cover at back of fridge it is the drain on the left the drain on the right is the fridge drain. After getting water to flow I had to cut away the old clip that was there and installed the new one. Put everything back together. We shall see how it works. 

Removed drawers and shelves. Removed screws holding back cover and gently pried away from back wall. Even so, there was some slight styrofoam damage repaired with white glue. Cut old clip off with pair of wire cutters. Old part was much smaller and riveted on. This much larger clip fit great and with it's greater surface area to transfer heat I recommend as an upgrade. Bent end tabs around coil for better contact then reassembled. Went to the back of the fridge and removed the back panel to clean drain tubes for good measure. Problem has not returned.
