How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6022801 / WPW10545255 Thermal Fuse

This oven fails when used as intended, in particular after running self-cleaning cycles, when all power and functions fail because the thermal fuse blows. I pulled out the oven, removed top panel, removed old fuse, replaced with the new! It's about a 30-minute job. The zip-tie anchors are really tricky to pull from the board. I had to use end-nippers to carefully clip the anchors while holding a finger below to prevent the clipped plastic from dropping into the interior. 

After running a self clean on the oven, we lost all power to the lights and control panel. I checked the breaker made sure it was not blown and checked to make sure power was going into the oven. Ordered the fuse and swapped it out. Easy and inexpensive fix. 

When the oven suddenly went dark after completing a self clean program, we pulled it out and checked the obvious culprits: breaker, power at the outlet, internal safety... Ah, the thermal fuse. A quick check online found several complaints of the same phenomenon. I ordered a replacement from APP and the repair was complete within 48 hours. I'd probably still be waiting for the repair man, but was baking cheesecake. Awesome. 

Open oven door. Remove 1 small screw on the flange of each side of the oven. These 2 screws hold the oven to the cabinet. Pull the oven out of the cabinet a few inches. Remove the 2 screws on each side of the touch pad control panel. Pull off the control panel. It will be attached by several wires. Leave these alone, and simply place the control panel on top of the open while you work. Remove the thermal fuse by pulling off the wire on each side, and squeezing the underside of the mounting clips while pushing up. Reverse the above steps with the new thermal fuse. (Note: I removed the metal trim piece below the control panel before removing the control panel, but I am unsure if this is necessary.) 

Pulled control panel & checked for continuity through rear TOD (first line suspected failure). That checked good, so checked thermal fuse, found that open. Jumped out to confirm circuit and oven operation. All appeared good, so ordered & replaced thermal fuse. 

Replaced the thermal fuse. The repair was easy enough, but this is the fourth time in five years that I've had to replace that part. If I were really happy with the performance of this appliance I wouldn't mind the frequent repair, but overall I'm not happy with the appliance's performance, so the frequent repair is making me begin to shop for a different appliance. (Whirlpool 30 in. Single Electric Wall Oven Self-Cleaning with Convection in Black Model # WOS92EC0AB) 

Ordered thermal fuse. For kebs109bbl remove 2 screws on side that hold in to wood. Pull oven out slightly to access 2 screws that hold control panel on each side. Remove them. Tip up carefully and rest on oven top. I did not have to remove cabling. Turn off breaker. Pinch the tabs that hold the thermal fuse onto bracket and wiggle to loosen. (The fuse, not yourself) Remove connectors and replace them on new fuse. Pop new fuse back in bracket. Reverse order to install. Be very careful to not drop a screwdriver on glass door. I rested my tiny needlenose Leatherman tool on door. Closed door and heard a crunch. Broke glass on inner door panel. $200 more dollars! It was just the right size to slide in the jamb and with it's strength and door leverage the glass had nought chance. Ordered another right here today. 

This is not the first time we have had issues with this oven. We've learned the hard way that the self clean oven feature blows the fuse and destroys the control panel. Over the past 5 years we've had numerous call outs and replacements of parts, it has not been a reliable oven. We gave up on the self clean feature after the first year. The oven had been operating as normal over the past 2 years and I went to bake muffins last week and it was dead. No lights on in the control panel and when I opened the oven door no lights inside the oven. I started googling as our oven is now 7 years old and of course out of warranty. I came across a great video and they posted a link to this site. I ordered the fuse and expedited shipping. The part arrived in 2 days just as requested. My husband turned the oven off at the electrical box, took 2 screws out of the front of the oven, pulled the oven out about 5 inches, so he could get to the sides of the control panel. He opened the control panel, screws at either side and I held the control panel (he could have disconnected it while he removed the fuse) but it was such a quick job he didn't bother. He had to use pliers to remove the fuse from its housing. He put the new fuse back in, put everything back and reset the breaker. Viola! The oven is working. This cost us very little in money and time and effort. I've ordered a second fuse for the next time this happens and book marked this site. Couldn't be happier. 

Between YouTube, a multimeter and Appliance Parts Pro I was able to diagnose the problem and fix the oven without an expensive service call. 

Called the local repair shop. They said it could be the main circuit board which would cost $550 to replace the entire electronic panel. Went online, found theis site. Found several people who had the same problem. Followed their instructions and checked the temperature fuse - it was bad. Ordered the part through AppliancePartsPro for about $40. Took about 20 minutes to change out the fuse and put oven back together. All is working fine. thanks for the advice!
