How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6800088 / W11200218 Grease

Checked out You tube video. Easy tune up. One gasket was damaged and I did not notice that the brush holders has no brushes. I believe a quick call to Appliance parts pros will fix this, besides I need a few more parts. I expect to get another 20+ years from this KitchenAide mixer, once repairs are competed. Watch out for the single lock washer located on the rear upper housing screw, you don't want to lose this! 

Being somewhat handy I told I would be glad to take a look and see if there was something I could do. Got the mixer home and found the transmission housing broken and front bearing breaking up also found worm gear assemble chewed up some. Found Appliance Parts Pro online and was able to all the parts needed to make what I am sure will be a long lasting repair. Once unit was cleaned of all the old grease and particles from bearing, new parts and appliance grease was added to complete the repair. Return to my friend in great working order. She was so please she called later in the day to say she had made a big batch of Pumpkin bread, Yum, thanks for your quick shipping and having everything I needed to do this project. From the time I took the mixer, diagnosed and order parts and made the repairs, I had the mixer back to her in 7 days, Thanks again your are definitely in my favorites. 

Took mixer apart and replaced worm gear and worm gear bracket and bearing. Replaced planetary grease to make sure broken teeth didn't cause further damage. 

First, I went on YouTube and found a site that showed how to replace the planetary for my mixer. We have ordered planetary form AppliancePartsPros. We followed the direction given on youtube and this fixed my mixer. 

I found instructions on the internet indicating this was a relatively easy fix and all I needed to do was take it apart remove the old grease which was separating into an oil and grease mix and repack with new grease. The instructions were easy to follow taking apart the mixer cleaning it out and putting in the new grease. Putting it back together following the directions was also easy until..... I tried to replace the planetary gear on the shaft. As I pressed the gear on the shaft the shaft itself slid upward to the point that when the gear was seated I could not replace the pin which holds the gear on the shaft because the hole in the shaft was to far above the hole in the gear to even align it. I took it apart again removed the grease checked that everything was aligned, repacked and tried again with the same result. On my third attempt I was having the same problem but I tried lightly and rapidly tapping on the bottom of the planetary gear and that technique helped the gear slide up the shaft to the point that I could use my pin driving tool to align the holes and place the pin in place. Bottom line, after 2 hours of battle the mixer works well and no longer leaks oil 

When I opened it up, the pinion gear had worn away at the lower gear housing, filling the housing with metal shavings. I replaced the lower gear housing and the pinion gear. I had to adjust the brass sleeve/bushing that the attachment shaft slips through on the planetary. The sleeve had shifted up, toward the lower gear housing which was causing the pinion gear to ride too high in the gear housing. Using a wooden dowel, I was able to hammer it back into the planetary housing. 

Replaced the phase control board and worm gear. While I had it apart I cleaned it out and replaced the grease which was breaking down and dripping. 

I've had my Kitchenaid Professional 6 for some time and eventually, the planetay head detached and fell off. Along with ordering a replacement, I ordered replacement gears as well, just to make sure everything was good. Sure enough, after removing the gear cover, some of them had damage. The entire process to replace the planetary and gears was simple. The only time consuming part was cleaning out all the old grease before re-assembly and greasing all the new gears. Also grease leaked past the old gasket into the body, so I had to clean that up as well. The only tool I had to purchase was some snap ring pliers, which I found a pair for $5 at a local hardware store. So again, besides dealing with the grease, it was quick and painless. 

Will wait until my wife uses it. 

Unplug mixer. Took off the top of the mixer (5 screws). Removed 2 screws from gear mechanism. Took off housing of gears. Removed Worm Gear and replaced. Easy job. Mixer fixed. Happy wife :)
