How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6005949 / WP2176759 Evaporator Fan Motor Grommet

I could not be happier with my Appliance Parts Pros experience. I googled my symptoms, and the 2nd result was a video from Appliance Parts Pros describing what the problem might be and exactly how to fix it. There was such a close match between my symptoms and the description that I ordered the parts --- with a 365 day return policy, my risk was limited. Almost too good to be true, the parts arrived next business day! I took it slow (about an hour) to install the new evaporator fan motor, blade, and grommet. Installation was trouble free on my 12 year old KitchenAid refrigerator, and the problem is now resolved. I can't think of a way the experience could have been better. 

After watching the video of the repair, I took the rear of the freezer compartment apart and replaced the fan motor and the mounting bushings. The whole job took about 1 hour to complete. No more noise! 

Installed a new motor. Emptied the freezer side first, then pulled the plug to turn off power. Next removed the top left vent cover, it snaps out. This exposes the only 1/4" screw holding the top plastic cover. Removed the screw and popped out the plastic cover which covers the top half of the back of the freezer. this exposes the top two 1/4" screws, the two 1/4" screws at the bottom are not hidden. Removed the four screws and popped out the metal cover which covers the bottom half of the freezer. there are four clips on this panel that hold it in place. Note, one of my clips would not stay in place when I put the cover back on. Now the motor is exposed, disconnect the two wires by lifting the little tab on the connector and pull connectors apart. Next remove the ground (green wire) by pulling the connector from the motor If you can see the connector slide the fan assembly out of its slot and flip it over. Now the fan is free of the wires squeeze the plastic clip and push up a little to free it on both sides. The motor will be free of the motor mount. Next pull the fan off from the motor. There are two clear rubber sleeves that hold the motor in the mount remove them from the motor and place on the new motor. now reassemble the everything in reverse the way you dissembled. 

Replaced evaporator motor, grommets, and retainer. Old issue was that the ground prong on the new motor was in a slightly different place, but cables were long enough to fit. 

Replaced motor. 

R/R went well - no problems, reset ice box and working fine. 

I replaced the Evaporator Fan Motor, Fan Blade, and Grommets. 

I replaced the Evaporator Fan Motor. 

We ordered a new fan blade and replaced both grommets. I think the fan blade was actually okay, the grommets seemed larger at the opening that goes on the motor shaft. I think it was them causing the noise. Time will tell. So, far it seems good, I think it sounds a bit noisy, but it may be that the fan is just working better. Temperature seems more stable, I have extra thermometers in there to check temps. Took longer to take everything out, than to do the repair. This is a 2006 model and still works fine, except for that noisy fan. The videos on this website are great!
