How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6022761 / WPW10538166 Motor To Sump Seal

After looking online, I found that it was typically from the pump motor on a Whirlpool dishwasher to die after three years... So after getting a quote for it to be repaired for over $350, I preferred to order the part here for $135, and it took less than a half-hour to fix. I've got clean dishes again! Thanks. 

It was a learning experience. First I turned off the power! I removed the lower kick plate, disconnected the drain hose and electrical connectors. Then removed the discharge pump and heat sensor then loosened the 4 hold down arms/clamps. Then I opened the door and pulled the base up from the inside. Now to remove and replace the Pump Motor. Then reverse the process. If I were to do again, I'd pull the dishwasher out and lay it on its back. 

All that really needed to be replaced was the seal on the diverter shaft. The seal is in the sump. Unfortunately the seal cannot be purchased individually and you must buy a complete new sump. I purchased a new sump and a pump grommet. The pump grommet probably did not need to be replaced but given the amount of work it took to get to that point it didn’t make sense not to replace it. Using the video on the website for the sump replacement made the job was very easy once I got the dishwasher removed from the cabinet. The video really made everything much easier. Knowing which way to turn things and what little catch had to be released was very valuable. The job took me about 45 minutes to replace everything and have the dishwasher back in place. I had to replace the clamp on the pump hose as the video shows. You might want to be prepared with the clamp before you start the job. OneNote on tools, you will need a torx driver 

Chopper on this model is inside the pump housing, so the most difficult part of the job is getting the dishwasher out from under the counter. Remove the motor/pump assembly as if you are replacing the motor to pump seal. Undo the three Allen screws holding the pump housing to the motor and separate the pump housing. Clean the pump housing and motor enclosure. Lay the motor enclosure back on top of the motor, lay the new chopper on top of the motor enclosure, turning the blade to engage the dogs on the impeller shaft, then assemble the pump housing to the motor using the three Allen screws. The rubber elbow is originally held by non-reusable hose clamps, so you will need a narrow worm drive hose clamp about 40mm in diameter to reassemble. 

I could hear relays clicking, but we didn't hear the "humming and wooshing" that we associated with water spraying around and dishes becoming clean. And indeed - sometimes they came out kind of OK and sometimes they came out straight up nasty. I probably should have done more diagnostics (like checking for voltage at the pump) but I decided to roll the dice and order a new pump. Replacement was entirely straightforward. The video was tremendously helpful. I took the repair job as a chance to clean everything up and check other fittings while I was at it. With a new pump the dishwasher was back to "humming and wooshing" as we remembered and both the dishes and the inside of the dishwasher are sparkling clean. I suspect that the pump was dying for a while before it got to the point that we really couldn't ignore it anymore. Either way, three cheers for Appliance Parts Pros. I googled the dishwasher model number and found illustrated parts diagrams, from which I determined the grommet part number. I then googled the part number and found that AppliancePartsPros.com had it in stock. They also offered several delivery options, including 2nd day, which I chose. I searched YouTube for dishwasher repair videos and found a Maytag video that showed how to replace the grommet on a dishwasher very similar to mine. I pulled out the machine and laid it on it's side. In addition to the grommet connection on the pump, there is also a second tube that has to be disconnected, It was held on with a compression clamp. I had planned on using a standard hose clamp to reconnect it, but the channel molded in the tube is narrower than a standard clamp, and I had not bought an appropriate clamp. I removed the compression clamp and reshaped it for reuse. The grommet went onto the pump easily, and then into the dishwasher mount. I used my PEX compression to to tighten the clamp on the other hose. This is a repair that is easy for a competent DIY person who is comfortable with plumbing repairs. Buy an appropriate hose clamp. 

Although I had to purchase the sump to get the required diverter motor shaft seal (it comes factory pressed into the sump), the repair worker perfectly. I received genuine Whirlpool brand replacement parts one day ahead of the scheduled delivery date. ?? - Since you have to remove the circulation pump from the old sump, I also replaced the gasket for it (motor to sump seal) - You also need to remove and replace one of the two factory crimped hose clamps at the circulation pump. It’s a narrow clamp, best purchased from Appliance Parts Pros or a local motorcycle shop, as automotive type clamps are too wide for a proper fit 

New pump. The tech told me how to test for the problem I thought it was the timer [wrong] 

Ouch, could not wait that long. Was told it might be available I at a distribution warehouse. Maybe? Went online to you and found it right away and could be delivered in one, two or three day delivery times. I took the two days and here it was right on time. And the price was about 2/3 of what it would have been. Thanks. 

Diagnosed with one of your videos online, ordered new pump and replaced as in video. works great! Be aware you need to have pinch clamp pliers or a suitable substitute to install.
