How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6039916 / W11024089 Evaporator Motor

I found a good Youtube video on how to disassemble the bottom door and back panel, once inside found a huge (hoooooge) ice ball about 5 inches in diameter encapsulating the defrost thermostat, melted all the ice from the copper line area and thermostat with a hair dryer. The aluminum cooling assembly was clear of frost and ice. I replaced the evaporator fan motor and all is working well now. Not sure why the ice ball formed where it did. 

Used a video from Ben's Appliances and Junk to run the diagnostics routine and narrow it down to the fan. Then I used the excellent video on AppliancePartsPros.com to replace the fan. (Absolutely essential video.) I ordered the part around 4 pm and received it about 10:30 am the next day. Remarkable! 

Ordered a fan and evaporator motor. Video was super helpful to dismantle plastic parts without breaking anything. When I removed the cover I discovered a large chunk of ice that was covering a sensor. Probably was causing the problem ( took a long time to defrost) but decided to change motor and fan while it was apart. Reassembled no problem and everything is working fine. Keep the motor as a spare. Refridge is 9 years old.

Replaced evaporator motor and fan located in the freezer. The location and removal of freezer components for access is the hardest part, but by no means challenging. Go slow (you can break plastic pieces if you’re not careful) and take pictures of how everything went together if it’s your first time. The videos are extremely helpful and accurate (especially when referencing how to remove the internal plastic components). If you’re not mechanically inclined, you can do it. I replaced the failed fan motor with a new Evaporator Fan Motor and Fan Blade. 

Removed the back panel in the freezer, discovered a ball of ice in the right corner, evaporator fan was not running, used a hair dryer to melt ice, powered up and evaporate got cold immediately, ordered a new fan from AppliancePartsPros.com and was at my door steps within 22 hours, replaced fan and refrigerator works like new. 

Replaced the evaporator fan motor. The replacement part looked different than the part I took out, and the wiring harness was different. I was about to panic and contact the seller about a new part, but I watched the video on the AppliancePartsPros.com site that was linked right under the part number. That video showed the old part I took out, the new different-looking part going back in, and how the new wiring harness plugged into the old existing one. It worked perfectly, and went off without a hitch! Having the video linked right there with the part number is a stroke of genius. I will definitely use this site again! Right part, was shipped overnight, with instructions. A do-it-yourselfer's dream website. 

After researching the issue on YouTube and several forums, I determined the Evaporator Motor had failed. Once I got the door, rear panel, and fan housing disconnected, replacing the motor was quite simple. The video on the evaporator motor info page was great! I replaced the motor, put everything back together, and we have a working refrigerator again.
