How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6008371 / WP339956 Lint Screen Housing Foam Seal

We ordered the parts from AppliancePartsPros.com and they came the very next day! My husband watched a couple of easy-to-follow videos on their website and learned how to take apart the dryer, fix the problems and put it back together again. All in all, it took him about 1.5 hours to complete the job ... clean up and all! 

Disassembled cleaned and re-assembled. Piece of cake. 

Replaced blower motor (bad bearing) - good to have wet/dry vac to suck up all the lint covering everything inside (should be on the tools list!) - the hardest part of this fix is always remembering how to remove the top cover (a putty knife is handy...) and the sequence of removing the nuts (the two under the lint screen cover.) 

Took apart the dryer. I replaced the drum wheels, belt, tensioner pulley, and felt seal. 

Replaced dryer fan. Seeing how it’s intermittent I’m still not sure if this will address the issue. Thermal safety would open. The one clue I had was quite a bit of sand-looking debris in the fan housing. Thought I would first replace the fan and keep my fingers crossed that this will address the high dryer temperature. 

Did diagnostics that showed the timer was defective. Order the part from AppliancePartsPros.com on Wednesday morning it arrived Thursday the next day! Correct part, I installed and the dryer works perfectly. Thanks, Ted 

My dryer was spinning and blowing but the air was not getting hot. I searched the symptoms on youtube and appliance parts pros video came up listing possible reasons for the failure and how to test for each. I was able to determine the thermal fuse went bad with a simple multi-meter. Just to be sure, I tested all other components as recommended by the APP video and they all checked good. I placed the order, and had the parts I needed in 2 days! Had to say I loved the "how to install" videos listed on the APP website. I wouldn't have been able to pull off this repair without them! 

Hi, I’m cheap so rather than replace my dryer, I prefer to repair it. In the end, it may be better to replace it with a new dryer. I have a gas dryer and hookup of a new one would be a pain to find a gas installer. Even if I convert back to electric, I’d still need a gas repairman to terminate the gas line. Anyway, I bought a new motor, flame sensor, and thermostat and replaced them. The strange occasional humming sound went away and the clothes are drying fine now. I had to adjust the angle of the motor to prevent a scrapping sound that occurred on the first drying cycle after restarting. I’m still waiting to dry more clothes to see if it’s finished scrapping. I’ve replaced other parts in the last year also. Solenoids for example. Is it better than buying new??? Not sure. But my dryer works now and I’m ok with it. Appliance parts pros do make things easy, but it’s a little pricey for some parts. I hope this helps others.

I needed to clear the excess lint out of the machine itself (already cleaned out the lint chute but there was more behind the circles inside the drum) because it was taking too long to dry a load of laundry. I watched a video showing me how to take off the back of the dryer to replace the housing foam, so I figured I'd go ahead and do that, too. It was really easy. Replacing the foam took all of 10 minutes - most of the time was spent taking the back cover off and putting it back on. I wish I knew about the seal so I could replace that as well. I'm not about to go through the process of taking the back off the dryer again, but if I needed to again I will replace the seal. Turns out there was a TON and I mean a TON of lint inside the dryer! In all the nooks and crannies. So glad I cleaned it all out. After looking at a few more videos, I realize that the dryer door switch is really what the problem is in getting the clothes dry since the dryer still runs when I open the door and the light doesn't work (although clearing out all that lint will be very helpful). So I ordered a new switch and will replace that as soon as it arrives. Apparently, the videos are addictive!! :-)
