How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6021680 / WPW10455268 Sump

I contemplated replacing it but was able to find all the parts right here and fix it within an hour. Now it works great with no leaks. I have been using AppliancePartsPros.com to maintain all my appliances as it has saved me thousands of dollars over the years. 

Replace the sump. I originally ordered from one of your competitors. Their sump did not come with the seals! Thank you for having the proper parts! 

After an initial misdiagnosis on my part (thought it was from the pump seal), I took the time to watch the full cycle and determined the leak was from the diverter motor seal. As this seal is only available as part of the complete sump assembly, I watched the repair video, read other customers stories, and decided to order the sump and make the repair myself. The part arrived quickly (as they always do) and I made the repair without any issues. Probably about an hour. And best of all, no more leak. If you have the factory installed clamps on the pump to sump, you'll need to buy a new clamp as the factory crimp type clamp isn't reusable. 

Replacing the sump. Sump fixed the leak and the video on the website walked me through it. with step-by-step instructions. 

Diagnosed the source of the leak to the small rubber seal around the diverter valve shaft motor. This is probably a $3.00 seal, but unfortunately, it is not available as an individual part anywhere. I had to buy the entire sump assembly. The part arrived and was exactly as described. The installation took about 1.5 hours, but only because of the need to adapt a different style of hose clamp to the main pump lines. I used a common screw-type hose clamp versus the one used crimp-on type supplied at the factory. They worked just fine, but I found by cutting the inner hose clamp retention ring on each end of the hose, they fit and clamped better. All said, it was probably best to have replaced the entire sump assembly, as something else would have failed later by just replacing the single seal. Tip: if you perform this repair, it is important to note the rotational position of the sump in the washtub hole. This is because you need to align the diverter valve manifold on the inside of the unit with its mating connections to the upper and lower dishracks. 

Changed out the sump which the seals are already installed in. I also changed out the diverter motor , not wanting to chance the shaft being worn. Running perfect again 

I was able to pull my Whirlpool dishwasher out from its cabinet without disconnecting the electrical supply, water supply line, and drain line. This allowed me to pull away the insulation at the bottom of the unit so I could observe it in operation. I had watched several YouTube videos about leaking Whirlpool dishwashers, so I was familiar with what I was looking at under the unit as it ran. I could see that it was leaking at the diverter motor shaft. The diverter motor shaft seal cannot be purchased separately, as it is available only as part of the sump assembly. I ordered the sump assembly from AppliancePartsPros.com on Sunday, 11/5/23 and paid for standard shipping. To my surprise and delight, it arrived on Tuesday, 11/7. The repair is easy, but time-consuming, since all the motors are mounted to the sump body and must be removed in order to replace it with a new one. The YouTube video covering the sump replacement procedure from AppliancePartsPros.com is excellent and provides very clear step-by-step illustrated instructions. It was actually one of the videos I had viewed prior to starting the repair. My dishwasher is now running perfectly again. 

I had to replace the sump. This is the second time I have had to replace the sump because of a leak at the diverter motor seal. The fix lasts about 5 or 8 years. I had some problems getting the sump to fit in the tub. I had a lot of trouble reinstalling the pump motor - the tab would not go far enough into the rubber grommet. 

After doing some research online and running the dishwasher found out the rubber gasket on the diverter pump was bad. I bought a new gasket on another site but then learned it was that easy as the gasket appears to machined into the sump. Ordered the sump from AppliancePartsPros.com as it was the cheapest I could find. Glad I didn't pay for expedited shipping as the standard shipping arrived just as fast. With part in hand I followed one of APP's easy videos and changed the sump. No more leaking!!
